What Is The Trial Work Period? And How Is This Different From Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)?
Last updated on September 24, 2025
If you think you may be able to return to work, you can use the Trial Work Period in Michigan. You still earn full benefits, but you can try working to see if financial independence is possible.
Here at Robert D. Paulbeck, Attorney at Law, I can help you explore your legal options. I have over 30 years of experience as a Trenton SSDI attorney, and I offer free initial consultations. If you have questions about the SSDI trial work period, I am the disability lawyer in Trenton who can give you the answers you are looking for.
What Is Substantial Gainful Activity?
Substantial gainful activity (SGA) is a related concept, but is notably different. Once a person reaches a certain threshold for SGA, their benefits are discontinued. They are no longer considered disabled. But this is much different than the TWP, because benefits do not stop during the trial.
What Happens During The SSD Application Process?
Before an SSDI work attempt in Michigan, you have to send in your initial application for benefits. It often takes up to eight months to get a decision, and you may have the option to appeal.
One of the most common hurdles for those in Michigan is providing medical evidence. I will work with you on gathering medical records and statements from medical professionals to demonstrate your disability and how long it is expected to last.
What Is The Role Of An Attorney?
As your attorney, it is my job to help you understand exactly what rights and obligations you have. I can answer questions about the threshold for substantial gainful activity in Michigan or what constitutes a disability. The Social Security Administration has a strict definition of disability; it must last for 12 months. I can help you know when you have a right to appeal so that you can use all of the legal options at your disposal.
