SSDI And Medicare: Understanding Your Options
Last updated on May 19, 2025
When you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, Medicare will likely become an important part of your health care plan. These two programs work together, but the rules can be intricate. This is where consulting a lawyer can be beneficial.
My name is Robert D. Paulbeck, and as a seasoned lawyer, I have been assisting clients with the complex area of disability benefit law for over 30 years. I am committed to helping you secure the benefits and health care coverage you deserve. You can turn to me for guidance on any aspect of SSDI benefits and Medicare.
When Do SSDI Recipients Qualify For Medicare?
After you start receiving SSDI benefits, you will likely be subject to a 24-month waiting period before you become eligible for Medicare. There are some exceptions, however, as certain serious medical conditions can qualify you for Medicare without waiting 24 months. I can let you know if you qualify.
How To Enroll In Medicare
Once your 24-month waiting period is complete, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare without having to take further action. This automatic enrollment includes Medicare Part A and Part B.
However, if you decide you do not want Part B or wish to add Part C (Medicare Advantage) or Part D for prescription drug coverage, you will need to take further action. I can help you understand these options and what steps you need to take to secure the coverage that best suits your needs.
