Social Security disability claims: Important timeframes and deadlines

For those unable to work due to a disability, applying for Social Security Disability (SSD) can be a valuable option for financial support.

The application procedure can be confusing and stressful and, with so much at stake, you want to make sure you are as informed as possible. One important place to start when educating yourself on the requirements is with deadlines and timeframes.

Initial claim

The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not currently have a deadline for filing your initial claim for SSD benefits. The qualification you will want to focus on in this stage is the retroactive benefits timeframe. The SSA will only grant 12 months of retroactive payments after the approval of your application.

Waiting for an extended period of time to file your initial claim could cause you to miss out on months of payments that you would otherwise qualify for. The timeline for notification of approval varies widely, which is another reason you should file sooner rather than later.

Denial appeal

If your initial application gets denied, you have 60 days from the date you received the SSA’s decision to file an appeal. During this reconsideration phase, your claim gets reviewed by someone who had no part in the initial application review. If the reconsideration results in a second denial, you have another 60 days from this notification to request a hearing with an administrative law judge.

Meeting deadlines ensures your claim is not denied on a technicality and increases your chances of receiving the benefits you deserve.
