Are You Applying For Social Security Disability Benefits?

Applying for Social Security Disability benefits is a complex process that only adds to the stress experienced by disabled applicants. A medical or psychological condition already prevents them from making a living. They must navigate through a frustrating bureaucratic process to secure a livable income.

The process starts with the Listing of Medical Impairments, also known as the Blue Book, published by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The manual lists disabling conditions for each major body system that qualifies for SSDI or SSI benefits. Impairments must be severe enough to interfere with an individual’s ability to achieve gainful employment.

The medically approved list of impairments includes:

  • Musculoskeletal problems
  • Vision and hearing loss
  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Digestive tract problems
  • Blood disorders
  • Neurological disorders
  • Immune system disorders
  • Mental disorders

While extensive, the Blue Book does not list all conditions that qualify for SSDI or SSI benefits. Applicants can still qualify if the medical condition is supported by clinical reports and limits residual functional capacity (RFC).

Applying for disability benefits and dealings with the Social Security Administration can become far too complicated to handle without legal help. Delays and initial rejections can become discouraging.
