Everyone these days seems to rely on self-help books and the internet to learn how to do just about anything. When it comes to couples looking to divorce, many couples feel inclined to do the same in the hope that they can shave a few dollars off the cost of putting an end to their marriage.

Is it legal to try to settle your divorce without an attorney’s help, though? Even if it is, is it a wise choice to do so?

Believe it or not, there are some jurisdictions that require couples to hire a divorce attorney to walk them though ending their marriage. Even if an attorney is not required where you live, they can be helpful to have around, especially if you or your ex have ownership rights to valuable assets, have kids or one of both of you are strong willed.

Divorce attorneys can be particularly helpful to have on hand to help you broker an agreement with your ex about child custody and visitation. If you don’t have one help you work out a plan on your behalf, then your kids may be exposed to unnecessary conflict between you and your ex, something that can adversely affect their emotions and behavior in the future.

If you and you ex earned disparate incomes when you were married, then you may wish to seek alimony in your divorce. On the flip side of things, you as the paying spouse may be decidedly against paying an outrageous amount of alimony that’s being demanded of you.

Divorce attorneys, by nature, are skilled negotiators. They can play a large role in either helping you demand more spousal support or finding a way for you to pay less depending on where your interests lie related to the matter.

One other important way that a divorce attorney can help you as you look to terminate your marriage is by negotiating who keeps and gives away marital assets. If you happen to have differing opinions over which assets are non-marital ones, then a divorce attorney can help you sort that out as well.

If you’re considering leaving your spouse, then you may first want to discuss your plans with a Trenton family law and divorce attorney to ensure that your interests are protected.
