SSA announces expedited application process for disabled vets

Though some veterans may not be aware of it, it is possible to obtain Social Security disability benefits in addition to VA disability benefits. The process of application, of course, is separate and involves different steps and requirements. For vets who are seriously disabled, having a dual disability income is an important means of support.

Now, the most seriously disabled vets will be able to obtain an expedited decision on the SSDI application. Last month, the Social Security Administration announced a new process that would allow those who have received a 100 percent Permanent and Total disability rating to cut through some of the red tape SSDI applications usually have to go through. In a time when SSDI applicants have to endure long waits, this is welcome news.

In order to take advantage of the process, vets are required to notify the Social Security Administration that they have received a 100 percent Permanent and Total disability compensation rating and provide proof of that rating along.

It is important for vets to keep in mind, though, that an expedited decision does not mean that one will automatically be approved for SSDI. As mentioned before, the VA and Social Security use different standards and processes for determining disability, and the two do not match up.

The new process is supposed to begin this month. Vets who have received a 100 percent Permanent and Total disability rating and who have questions about qualifying for the expedited process should either get in contact with the Social Security Administration or an attorney experienced in the area.
