Workplace injuries can occur in nearly any environment, but it is well known that certain industries are more prone than others to having injured workers. Not only that, but there may be a difference in the number of workplace injuries and illnesses depending on the state one works in, even in the same industry.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, location may play a bigger role in worker injury and illness than has previously been recognized. Some states simply have higher rates of injury and illness than others. Michigan is reportedly among the states with the highest rate of workers who are injured seriously enough to involve “days of job transfer or restriction.”

Other states appearing alongside Michigan include California, Indiana, Connecticut, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, and South Carolina. Each of these states has rates above the national average.

In terms of industry, the report listed these as being the most dangerous: amusement parks and arcades; animal slaughtering and processing; beverage manufacturing; foundries; nursing care facilities; motor vehicle manufacturing; and community care facilities for elderly folks.

Injuries in each of these industries can vary, of course, but each has its unique risks. As is well known, health care is notorious for back injuries due to unfavorable ergonomic conditions. Back injury, too, is one of the most frequently cited reasons for filing for SSDI.

Workers who have questions about how to file for SSDI should consult an experienced attorney right away to have their case evaluated and get their options out on the table.
